What is Septoplasty?

A Septoplasty is a surgical procedure designed to straighten a deviated septum, which is the bone and cartilage dividing the nostrils. By recontouring and repositioning the septum to the midline, this procedure improves your nasal airflow, fixes obstruction, and relieves chronic congestion, allowing you to breathe normally through your nose. A septoplasty is a functional, not cosmetic, surgery, which may be covered by insurance. A septum may be deviated from birth, but it can also become crooked, misshapen, or displaced from an injury or trauma.

What Are the Benefits of the Septoplasty?

There are several temporary solutions for relieving sinus headaches, nasal congestion, and allergies, but they do not address the core issue of a deviated septum. Our septoplasty surgery in San Francisco can produce major, life-changing benefits, including:

  • Improved airflow through the nose
  • Better sleep quality
  • Symmetry inside the nose
  • Gets rid of nasal blockage
  • Heals chronic sinusitis
  • Reduces the likelihood of nosebleeds
  • Better sense of smell
  • Peace of mind regarding your breathing
  • Gets rid of headaches caused by a deviated septum

Who Are the Best Candidates for the Septoplasty?

Just because you have a deviated septum doesn’t mean a septoplasty is wanted or needed. But if your deviated septum is getting in the way of things like your everyday breathing and sleep quality, you may want to consider getting one. Here are some additional characteristics our San Francisco septoplasty patients share:

  • Chronic sinus infections and sinusitis
  • Persistent issues breathing through one or both nostrils
  • Headaches and pain in your face
  • Congestion that affects your sleep quality
  • Sleep apnea or insomnia
  • Allergies
  • Loud snoring
  • Respiratory issues
  • Trauma or injury to your nose
  • Non smoker
  • Dry mouth
  • Noisy breathing
  • In good overall health with no underlying conditions that would interfere with the surgery or healing process
  • Realistic expectations and goals

What’s the First Step?

As your first step toward a septoplasty, Dr. Meaghan Noud and her experienced team will meet with you for a private consultation at our office in San Francisco. During your consultation, you will go over several topics, including your concerns about your nose’s function, how it affects your life, your expectations, and any questions you have. Dr. Noud will perform a thorough examination of your nose to ensure the procedure can effectively improve your breathing and nasal function. She may do a nasal endoscopy and take some photos to use as a reference for the procedure.

If Dr. Noud approves you for a septoplasty, she will provide a treatment plan tailored to your unique nose and goals, along with instructions to follow before your surgery.

What to Expect on the Day of Septoplasty Surgery

As your septoplasty begins, you will be given general anesthesia. This ensures you rest peacefully while Dr. Noud conducts the surgery. The surgery will last 1 to 3 hours, depending on the severity of the deviated septum.

During the surgery, Dr. Noud will make a small incision at the base of the nose or on one side. Then, she’ll lift the mucosa (thin membrane) that covers and protects your septum, so she can reshape the septum’s bone and cartilage into a straighter position and clear blockages, allowing you to breathe easier. After Dr. Noud has finished with this step, she’ll close your incision with sutures.

You will need to be taken home by a trusted contact who can help you recover for the first couple of days.

Recovery & Healing

Septoplasty Recovery

You can expect some initial swelling, pain, and bruising, which will be worst for the first few days to a week, but it will gradually improve over time.

Recovering from a septoplasty should be taken very seriously, as ignoring some crucial instructions may harm your nose and reverse the effects of the surgery.

Here are some instructions you should follow as you recover from your San Francisco septoplasty at Statera Cosmetic and Reconstructive Surgery:

  • Wear a splint or bandages wrapped around your nose at all times unless showering, which you can do 24 to 48 hours after the surgery
  • Avoid blowing your nose for the first few days
  • Avoid strenuous activity and lifting heavy objects for at least a few weeks
  • Take the prescribed pain medication to help alleviate discomfort
  • Sleep on your back to avoid pressure on your nose
  • Attend all follow-up appointments with Dr. Noud
  • You may return to work within a couple of weeks
